Green waste no longer accepted at transfer stations

Latrobe City Council has reminded residents that from Friday 1 October 2004, garden green waste such as prunings, tree limbs and branches, weeds, leaves and lawn clippings will no longer be accepted at Latrobe City Transfer Stations.

The move follows the introduction of a fortnightly green waste collection as part of Council’s recycling and waste collection service, and the establishment of dedicated green waste recycling facilities in Moe, Morwell and Traralgon.

The dedicated green waste recycling facilities are operated by Pine Gro Pty Ltd, who was awarded the green waste component of Latrobe City’s recycling and waste collection service following a tendering process earlier this year.

The Moe green waste facility is located in Della Torre Road and is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 5pm; the Morwell facility in Monash Way is open from 9am to 5pm seven days a week; and the Traralgon facility in Rocla Road is open Saturdays and Sundays from 9am to 5pm.

Latrobe City’s Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said the new arrangements were aimed at minimising the volume of organic waste going to landfill.

"The introduction of the three-bin recycling and waste collection service in July means that most residents now have the capacity to dispose of their ongoing green waste fortnightly, and the regular 240 litre collection will negate the need for them to dispose of their green waste by having to make an occasional trip to the transfer station," Mr Buckley said.

"Of course, many residents will undertake a special garden project where they generate a considerable amount of green waste at the one time, and they need to be aware that it will need to be taken to one of the dedicated green waste recycling facilities from 1 October," Mr Buckley said.

"These new arrangements will help Latrobe meet challenging new objectives set by the Victorian State Government’s ‘Towards Zero Waste’ policy. This includes the need to increase the effective recovery and recycling of green waste by salvaging all suitable green waste material and reprocessing it into quality mulch and compost products.

"The environmental benefits of recycling Latrobe’s green waste include reduced greenhouse emissions and the return of valuable organic materials to the environment. This in turn will extend the life of existing landfills and make Latrobe more sustainable for the future," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City Waste Education Officer, Peter Collins, said that disposing of organic materials to landfill was not only a waste of resources, it also had other negative environmental impacts.

"Green organics produce the largest source of landfill leachate, which can pollute groundwater; and decomposing organics in landfill release methane, a major contributor to greenhouse gas emissions. Properly managed composting processes such as that offered through the green waste recycling facilities, should not release methane," Mr Collins said.

Mr Collins said that approximately 1.7 million tonnes of green waste is sent to landfill each year in Victoria, making up more than 40 percent of the total waste stream. "This is over 350kg for every person living in Victoria. The State Government’s requirement is to reduce this by 50%, to 175 Kg by 2010/11.

"The best environmental strategy is for households to compost their lawn clippings and leaves in a compost bin at home, and only dispose of branches and prunings through the green waste collection or a trip to the green waste recycling facility. There are huge benefits for the garden in home composting," Mr Collins said.

"It is important that only uncontaminated green garden waste is taken to the green waste recycling facility. Items that will not be accepted at the facility include glass, any form of plastic or metal, rags or clothing, batteries, tyres, syringes, dressed and waste timber, dead animals, human or animal waste and household waste," Mr Collins explained.

"Green waste will not be accepted at the recycling facilities in plastic bags," Mr Collins stressed. "Nor should green waste enclosed in plastic bags be placed in your green waste recycling bin," Mr Collins added.
