Successful asset protection burns in Gippsland

The Department of Sustainability and Environment (DSE) and the CFA have worked in partnership over the spring months to ensure that asset protection burns around the region have been conducted safely and effectively.

Approximately 40 small controlled burns conducted close to townships have proved testing for both fire crews and residents, but all the burns were successful and will provide some fire protection for homes and recreational areas close to state forest.

DSE Regional Fire Manager, David Tainsh said that the success of these burns was due to the close cooperation between the two firefighting agencies, the use of local knowledge and the willingness of everyone concerned to assist in conducting burns as safely as possible.

"DSE and the CFA are developing better relationships than ever in the fight to protect our communities from the threat of fire," Mr Tainsh said.

"With this improved cooperation comes a better understanding of how to work with communities and inform and educate them about our preparations and plans for the coming season."

CFA Operations Manager for Region 11 (East Gippsland), Mark Reid said that it is very encouraging to see DSE Fire Management Officers look at different ways of engaging local communities and our CFA Brigades.

"It is all about relationships and we are working hard with DSE to strengthen and improve our already close relationships," Mr Reid said.

"By asking for advice and jointly planning fuel reduction burns around the private/public land interface, they are effectively getting the support and practical help to conduct these burns."

With the declarations of fire restrictions in the shires of Wellington, East Gippsland and Latrobe on December 1, these strategic burns offer additional protection as we move into the summer period.
