State funding brings arts closer to the community

Over one hundred thousand dollars has been granted through State Government Arts Victoria funding to the arts in Latrobe City.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 21st December 2004 - Back to News

Latrobe City’s Regional Performing Arts Centre will receive $35,000 and the Latrobe Regional Gallery $81,500.

In welcoming the funding, Latrobe City Deputy Mayor, Cr Darrell White, said the whole community was the beneficiary of the grants which were aimed at encouraging communities to enjoy and explore their local arts scene through a range of programs, performances, exhibitions and incentives offered by arts facilities.

Latrobe Regional Gallery Director, Louise Tegart, said that increased audience access and participation were key objectives. "We utilise the State Government funding for the gallery to attract new audiences and audiences that may have fallen away during the period when the gallery was closed for refurbishment," Ms Tegart explained.

"We’ve initiated talks, lectures and educational programs; developed school packages that incorporate gallery tours, and we are also providing school holiday programs that encourage creativity and a love of the arts in the young.

"Young people are the emerging artists of tomorrow and if we can engender a familiarisation with, and love of art and creativity at an early age, the benefits will be reaped by the whole community in years to come," Ms Tegart said.

Latrobe City’s Performing Arts and Venues Coordinator, Kathleen Roberts, said the performing arts funding was aimed at providing a more diverse and accessible variety of performances for Latrobe audiences.

"This particular round of funding is underwriting some of the costs of providing the Latrobe Performing Arts season taking place in 2005, such as the Cafe Concert, Morning Music, and education series. As a consequence ticket prices over a range of programs are within reach of a much wider audience," Ms Roberts said.

Local Labor Member, Brendan Jenkins, said the Minister for the Arts, Mary Delahunty, had announced funding in excess of $2.4 million to the arts in regional and outer metropolitan Victoria.

"Funding of this nature is important to ensure that audiences throughout Victoria have access to professional arts and cultural experiences in their own communities," Mr Jenkins said.

"The funding for Victoria’s regional performing arts centres, regional public galleries and key service providers, as well as touring performances and exhibitions, is part of the Government’s commitment to providing all Victorian’s with arts and cultural opportunities," Mr Jenkins said.

Mr Jenkins said that the Brack’s Government initiatives such as these benefited both audiences and artists. "This funding will not only support the galleries in the management and care of these collections, but will ensure that local communities and indeed all Victorians have access to them."
