Awareness Awards recently.

The project, established post the 2009 bushfires which severely impacted the Latrobe Valley region was led by GippsTAFE and also involved a number of other local organisations.

"With GippsTafe as the lead agency and in partnership with a number of agencies and community organisations this project has helped with the rebuilding of bushfire-affected communities whilst creating new jobs," said Mr Northe.

"A workforce of 42 was established through the project with a number of training qualifications and skills gained by the participants.

"Many local communities benefited from the project with walks and trails reinstated, fences re-established and public places and parks restored."

Mr Northe said the "Crew for a Day" project was another aspect to the program which assisted residents with duties such as wood splitting, landscape work and general clean ups.

"This was a fantastic initiative that provided practical outcomes for bushfire impacted residents, along with some relief from enduring the hard work alone."

Mr Northe also commended the ever popular Callignee & Traralgon South "Stitch & Chat" group who was also a recipient of a special incentive grant.

"This is a great testament to the team who have done an amazing job in providing community members with the opportunity to participate in a range of art and craft activities post the bushfires.

"Being involved in groups based around crafts and hobbies can often be very beneficial, as members feel involved and are able to talk about their lives in a welcoming environment with like-minded community members."

Mr Northe also commended Michelle Smale from Traralgon and Sue Whitbourne from Lindenow who were recently honoured at the 12th Annual Ambulance Victoria Community Hero Awards.

Michelle and Sue placed themselves in a precarious position following a motor vehicle accident on the Princes Highway in April of this year, which was incredibly courageous, said Mr Northe.

"Despite the heavy traffic both brave ladies assisted those in need including an occupant of the car who was in cardiac arrest.

"I commend both courageous ladies for their amazing efforts; they are true community heroes."
