Latrobe City will not be ignored on energy future

Latrobe City Council has welcomed the Federal Minister for Industry, Greg Hunt’s suggestion of a new power station to secure the future of Alcoa’s Portland Aluminium Smelter, but says the new station should be built in the Latrobe Valley.

Mayor, Councillor Kellie O’Callaghan, said the Federal Government owed it to the people of the Latrobe Valley to devote as much energy into ensuring this region did not suffer in the fall out of the closure of Hazelwood Power Station.

Following the news of Federal Minister for Industry, Greg Hunt’s trip to the US to discuss the future of Alcoa’s Portland Aluminium Smelter, Cr O’Callaghan said Latrobe City Council and its community would not be ignored on matters of power supply and economic security for the region

"Our region is resource-rich with significant supplies of brown coal, with an experienced workforce, with infrastructure already in place to offer energy security to the state. If the Federal Government believes it is important to step in to ensure Portland retains its smelter, Latrobe City would like to request the same.

Portland currently gets its energy from the Latrobe Valley, so why should that change?

"It is possible to build a new coal-fired power station here with low emissions.

Last month Latrobe City Council delegates visited Isogo Power Plant, a coal-fired power station in Yokohama, Japan.

This power station commenced operation in 2009 and has emissions less than half that generated by Hazelwood.

"The Isogo Power Plant uses ultra-supercritical technology and operates at a higher efficiency than our Latrobe City-based power stations. It has an emissions intensity of around 0.8 kg CO2/mwh, which is somewhat lower than the Latrobe City-based power plants which are all in excess of 1.2 kg CO2/mwh. Hazelwood is about 1.6 kg CO2/mwh.

"Latrobe City has a workforce and ready supply of coal to enable a new power station to be operational expeditiously.

"Together with Carbon Capture Storage we could have new secure base-load power with no emissions," Cr O’Callaghan concluded.
