Major Water Storage At Orbost To Go Under Cover

East Gippsland Water is to install a specialist cover over a major water storage at Orbost

By Gippsland Water - 10th May 2012 - Back to News

- to boost long term water security and maintain drinking water supplies for customers in Orbost, Marlo, Jarrahmond and Newmerella.

The Victorian Government has awarded $300,000 from its Small Towns Water Quality Fund to assist with the $600,000 project, with the remaining $300,000 coming from East Gippsland Water.

The specialist shade cloth cover will be installed over Orbost's 45 million litre clearwater storage, which is used to hold treated drinking water before it is supplied to customers. The cover will greatly reduce any risk of soil, algal or airborne contamination of the stored water, while also cutting evaporation from the storage by up to 90 per cent.

Installation of the cover is expected to get underway early in the 2012/13 financial year and take approximately 12 months to complete, with the supply of drinking water to customers maintained as normal for the duration of the project.

East Gippsland Water already has shade cloth covers installed over water storages at Mallacoota, Omeo, Cann River, Swifts Creek, Bemm River and Lindenow, which demonstrate the effectiveness of the material.

Said East Gippsland Water's Managing Director Les Mathieson: "We welcome the Victorian Government's funding support for this worthwhile initiative, which is being driven by our commitment to provide customers with high quality, value-for-money water services.

"This project is being delivered as part of our five year, $67 million capital works program across the East Gippsland region. This program was commenced in 2008, to ensure the long term security and quality of water supplies for all our customers, regardless of the size of their community."

News of the storage cover for Orbost comes just months after half-a-million-dollars-worth of high-tech water filters were installed at the town's raw water storage - boosting the quality of water before it enters the water treatment process and therefore reducing treatment costs. The two filters will also help ensure that Orbost's water treatment plant is able to produce sufficient additional drinking water to meet future population growth in the area."
