Work Experience At Bass Coast Shire Council

Bass Coast Shire Council is helping local students get a head start on their futures by participating in the Year 10 work experience program.

Council is hosting four work experience students this week, helping them gain important hands on experience in a workplace environment across a variety of areas.

The four students are Mia Allen from Mary MacKillop College and Jesse Jones, Ben Hartley and Ben Dickie from Newhaven Secondary College.

While the Year 10 group hasn’t yet set their minds on what they want to do when they finish school, they do know which career paths they want to test.

Mia and Ben Hartley are completing the program in Council’s Design and Engineering area.

"I like maths so I thought engineering would be a good place to start and I’ve found it very interesting," said Mia, "This experience has contributed to helping me make a decision on what I would like to do in the future."

"I’ve thought about being an engineer and wanted to experience what it’s really like," said Ben.

Jesse is working in the Information Technology area. "I am considering working in the IT area because it is something I really enjoy doing. It’s good to get some hands on experience," Jesse explained.

Ben Dickie, undertaking work in Council’s Town Planning area, said "I would consider Planning as a career because I like being able to do some work outside the office."

Bass Coast Shire Council is also hosting work placement TAFE student Lyn O’Halloran. Lyn currently works for Council as a Home Carer, but is doing work placement in the Aged and Family Services area as part of a Business and Administration course at Chisholm TAFE, Wonthaggi.

Lyn said that after being a Home Carer for almost five years, she wanted to experience what the administrative side of Council was like.

"It’s completely different to what it was when I left school. I hope this experience will lead to administration work for Council some time in the future," she said.

Council’s Human Resources Coordinator, Kate Spall, welcomed any students in the local area to apply for work experience.

"It is fantastic to be able to offer the students of Bass Coast the opportunity to find a career path they enjoy, or even to eliminate the careers they aren’t interested in," said Ms Spall.
