Project to boost transport access and cut isolation wins nearly $416,000 in grant

An innovative Wellington Shire Council-led initiative to help boost access to transport for people otherwise isolated from important services, jobs and social activities, has scooped a State Government grant of $415,900.

By Wellington Shire Council - 11th August 2003 - Back to News

Health Minister Bronwyn Pike and Transport Minister Peter Batchelor have announced three years funding under the Transport Connections Program for the Let’s GET Connected initiative, which is being run by Wellington in partnership with East Gippsland Shire Council.

The announcement is particularly significant to both Councils as they represent (geographically) two of the largest shires in Victoria, where the potential to feel isolated is correspondingly greater. It can affect people living in the most remote districts right through to those on town fringes.

Key amongst groups to be helped are isolated seniors, those with disabilities and young people. They will be given every assistance to establish community-focused, common-sense transport schemes that address their particular needs and make the best use of local resources. A project steering committee has been formed which has broad representation from community organisations across Wellington and East Gippsland Shires. Groups that are more localised will also be set up to ensure everyone with an interest in transport is able to get involved.

In addition advertising is underway for two Transport Project Officers to help drive the initiative forward, with 20 August the closing date for applications.

Said Wellington’s Mayor John Jago: "This is a very important initiative, with the potential to have a profound impact on the lives of those in Wellington who might otherwise feel shut off from the rest of the community. We’re delighted with this grant which will prove invaluable in helping to get much needed, well targeted transport services up and running. It’s important now that those affected do everything they can, with the Council’s support, to drive this initiative forward."
