Water Restrictions Go Down To Stage 1 For Mitchell River Customers

East Gippsland Water is pleased to announce that water restrictions for its 17,000 customers reliant on the Mitchell River System will be reduced from Stage 3 (High) to Stage 1 (Mild) from midnight on Friday night, 27 July.

By East Gippsland Water - 23rd July 2007 - Back to News

Customers affected are those connected to the urban water supply in Bairnsdale, Lindenow, Lindenow South, Walpa, Eagle Point, Newlands Arm, Raymond Island, Paynesville, Sarsfield, Bruthen, Nicholson, Johnsonville, Swan Reach, Metung, Kalimna, Lakes Entrance, Lake Tyers Aboriginal Trust, Lake Tyers Beach and surrounding areas.

The move, just four weeks after restrictions were scaled back from Stage 4 to Stage 3, comes as drinking water storages across the Mitchell River System continue to make healthy gains. They now stand at more than 50% full – well up from the low of 28.4% recorded back in early June.

Said East Gippsland Water’s Managing Director, Les Mathieson: "We are continuing to make very useful gains in our drive to top up depleted storages in time for the summer season.

"Our ongoing operation at Woodglen to clean water from the Mitchell, removing soil and bush fire debris, is paying dividends. So too is the extraction of bore water.

"Building on this success, staff are working hard to put us in a position where we can remove Stage 1 restrictions, the lowest level, as soon as possible."

Under Stage 1 Water Restrictions, Mitchell River System customers will once again be able to use sprinklers and automatic watering systems on their gardens, including lawns.

A brochure detailing all the stages of water restrictions is available from East Gippsland Water’s Bairnsdale office (133 Macleod Street) during office hours and the Lakes Entrance depot at the end of Golf Links Road, between 9am and 10am weekdays. Details of water restrictions can also be found on the Authority’s website www.egwater.vic.gov.au

For more information, customers can call East Gippsland Water’s hotline on 1300 720 700.
