Smooth changeover for Meals on Wheels predicted

Latrobe City Council is anticipating a smooth changeover between contractors for the supply of the meals delivered by volunteers through the Meals on Wheels service.

By Latrobe Shire Council - 28th June 2004 - Back to News

The Mid City Tavern takes over the contract for the supply of meals delivered to residents in Morwell, Traralgon, Traralgon South, Yallourn North, Boolarra Churchill, Yinnar and Callignee from 1 July.

Latrobe City’s Acting Chief Executive Officer, Paul Buckley, said that disruptions in the delivery of the meals to their recipients were not expected.

"There are some minor changes being made to the way meals are presented to recipients that reflect changing food regulations, and they are being introduced at the same time as the contract changeover," Mr Buckley explained.

"For instance, juice will no longer be provided directly in a glass. If recipients are delivered four or more meals per week they will receive a weekly one-litre tetra brick pack, or if they receive three or less meals per week they will receive individualised servings of juice.

"The meals will now come with new lids advising recipients of safe storage and re-heating instructions. For example, ‘If you don’t intend to eat your meal straight away, please refrigerate immediately’. The changes are all about best practice in food safety and handling," Mr Buckley said

"Soups will also be delivered in individualised containers rather than being ladled into a bowl. Recipients will now be offered a choice of two different soups, but these will no longer be delivered hot, as they are often not consumed immediately, which can create a food hazard, so they will need to be heated prior to consumption."

Mr Buckley said it was an opportune time to thank Sheryn Tyler and the Staff at Glenwood for their supply of meals over the past 10 years.

"I would also like to thank the fabulous team of volunteers who deliver Meals on Wheels to our residents. Their dedication to the job brightens the day of many a resident in Latrobe, and the meals they deliver ensure many people in our community can retain their much cherished independence," Mr Buckley said.

"Latrobe’s Meals on Wheels service always has a need for extra volunteers, and I know they would greatly appreciate additional offers of a helping hand," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City Manager Aged and Disability Services, Steve Tong, said the Aged and Disability Services team had enjoyed an excellent working relationship with Sharyn Tyler and the team at Glenwood and wished them well for the future.

"From 1 July the contract for the supply of meals changes and we will be monitoring the changes to ensure that everything works out as planned," Mr Tong said.

"Feedback regarding the new processes, and the quality and taste of the meals recipients receive under the new Meals on Wheels supply contract will be welcomed.

For further information on changes to Meals on Wheels, recipients can contact the Aged and Disability Services team, telephone 1300 367 700.
