Golden Cypress Replacement

In late July, Bass Coast Shire Council starts another phase of work to rejuvenate the Golden Cypress trees in Thompson Avenue, Cowes.

According to Council’s Infrastructure Maintenance Manager, Jamie Sutherland, the work will happen over two months and includes the removal of three Golden Cypress trees, four Chinese Elm trees and one Queensland Box tree.

"We’ve been working closely with the Friends of the Golden Cypress and qualified arborists to ensure the health and safety of the trees," said Mr Sutherland.

"The Chinese Elm trees were planted about ten years ago as a temporary measure until replacement Golden Cypress trees were ready for planting.

"The intention has always been to replace these trees.
"The Golden Cypress trees earmarked for removal are getting to a point where they are structurally unsafe.

"Council staff have completed maintenance work on a number of other trees in the Avenue, but unfortunately these three trees will need to be removed," explained Mr Sutherland.

The trees will be replaced with young Golden Cypress trees, propagated in Monbulk and moved to the Cowes depot for acclimatisation.

Mr Sutherland said seven new trees would be planted.

"The Box tree and one of the Chinese Elms are too close together, so we are replacing these with just one Golden Cypress," explained Mr Sutherland.

The trees will be planted straight after the removal and will have root barriers to direct their growth and stop any long term damage to footpaths and roadways.

Tree guards will also be installed to help protect the young trees.

Anne Davie of Friends of the Golden Cypress said she was pleased the trees would be replaced by young Golden Cypress grown specifically for this purpose.

"We’re pleased with the start of this replacement strategy, which preserves the historic character of Cowes for future generations," said Ms Davie.

"This replanting also removes the potential hazard of these old trees, so the public is kept safe. It’s a positive outcome for everyone involved."

There is information available on Council’s website on the Golden Cypress project, including a map showing the removal and replacement of trees. If you have any questions about this work, please contact Council’s Infrastructure Maintenance Team on 1300 BCOAST (226 278).
