29 percent of the Bass Coast Shire population are currently aged 60 and over and this is expected to rise to 45 percent by 2021.

Council’s Social Planner, Jeanette Draper, said the adoption and strong vocal support of the Policy was clear acknowledgement of the magnitude of the demographic change and the need for a pro-active approach.

"Bass Coast Shire Council is committed to taking a leadership role in dealing with an ageing population.

"The older people of Bass Coast make a valuable contribution to the community.

"It is important that we provide a positive, safe and supportive environment," said Ms Draper.

The Positive Ageing Policy was initiated to clarify Council’s role and responsibilities in relation to the older residents of Bass Coast Shire.

"It is essential that both Council and the community are clear on what the needs of older residents are," said Ms Draper.

"It is also important that the community have the opportunity to communicate their expectations of what services will be provided.

Adoption of the Policy will assist Council to prioritise when addressing issues relevant to older residents.

The Positive Ageing Policy will form the basis of the Bass Coast Shire Positive Ageing Strategy. The Strategy will address the issues identified from the What Price Wisdom Project, 2004. This project looked at the social and economic impact of the ageing populaton of Bass Coast Shire.

A reference group has been convened to oversee the development of this strategy.
