Slow Down And Enjoy The Weekend

Bass Coast Shire Council is urging residents and visitors to drive safe, slow down and enjoy the long weekend festivities.

Community Safety Manager, Peter Laydon, said the RoadSafe "speed kills" message was still being ignored by many drivers.

"Victoria had the highest road tally over the Christmas period and there have been some terrible accidents in the Gippsland region," said Mr Laydon.

"It is very important that people slow down, observe the speed limits and drive to the local conditions."

Roadwork on the Bass Highway and record visitor numbers means motorists will face delays in towns and attractions around the Shire.

"We’re advising drivers to plan ahead, allow extra travel time and expect heavy traffic in some areas," said Mr Laydon.

"Not only are we anticipating an influx of visitors over the long weekend but there are also events like the Cowes Night Market, Inlet Swim Classic and Kilcunda Lobster Festival that are likely to attract more visitors, making things even busier."

Visitor numbers and increased traffic is expected to continue right through January, with the San Remo Channel Challenge and Chill Island coming up and motorists are being urged to show restraint and slow down.

"As a road user, when you make a decision to speed you’re also choosing to put yourself and others at serious risk of injury or being killed," continued Mr Laydon.

"We really want people to have a great time, but also have a safe time," said Mr Laydon.

Speeding and inappropriate travel speeds directly contributed to around 30 per cent of deaths on Victorian roads last year.

If you hit a pedestrian driving as slow as 20 km/h, there’s a strong chance they will be seriously injured or killed.
