After funding for a sports or recreation project?

Wellington Shire Council is flagging up the availability of State Government grants designed to assist local community groups and organisations with worthwhile sports and recreation ventures.

By Wellington Shire Council - 13th October 2003 - Back to News

The grants are offered through two schemes aimed at helping to build stronger communities in regional and rural areas – The Country Action Grant Scheme and Minor Facilities Funding. Both are being administered by the Department for Victorian Communities (DVC).

The Country Action Grant Scheme supports activities that will enhance skills in the community. Available to non-Government, not-for-profit clubs, organisations and community groups at the delivery end of sport and recreation there are four categories of grant up for grabs:

  • ‘Improving Organisations’ – for initiatives that enhance the way organisations operate;
  • ‘Enhancing Skills’ – funding for coaches and officials, administrative staff and committee of management members to attend training courses;
  • ‘Including Everyone’ – for initiatives aimed at providing accessible sport and recreation opportunities for everyone in the community – such as those with disabilities, women and indigenous people;
  • ‘Victalent’ – financial assistance for organisations to support developing athletes, coaches, officials and teams who need to travel extensively to train and compete.

Grants of up to $5,000 are on offer to successful applicants, with the exception of the ‘Victalent’ category where $500 is available per nomination.

The closing date for applications, which need to be lodged with the DVC, is 14 November. Application forms and further information can be obtained from Wellington Shire Council’s Recreation Development Officer Michael Rowell on 5142 3316, through the DVC’s website www,sport.vic.gov.au/cags and from the Victorian Business Centre, 33 Breed Street Traralgon (Tel: 5174 7308).

Meanwhile Minor Facilities Funding, offering a maximum of $50,000 a project, is being directed at helping sports and recreation organisations, committees and Councils work together to advance the development of grass roots sport and recreation facilities.

Local applications need to be lodged with the Shire Council by 7 November. These will be carefully assessed, with the best three sent on to the DVC for further consideration and the successful projects announced in May 2004.

A wide variety of projects are eligible for funding under this initiative, with the DVC giving priority for example to those increasing community accessibility and participation, such as for traditionally disadvantaged groups.

Again application forms and further details are available from Wellington’s Michael Rowell, from the DVC’s website and from the Victorian Business Centre in Traralgon.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "These grants provide a great chance for local community groups and organisations involved with sport and active recreation to get some invaluable financial help for worthy initiatives. We would encourage them to grab this opportunity."
