Committee to advise on Morwell Landfill’s future

Latrobe City Council has facilitated the formation of a consultative committee to monitor progress on the Morwell Landfill Rehabilitation project.

The committee consists of representatives from Lyndale Farms, Morwell Golf Club, Grandridge Plantations, Maryvale Private Hospital, Crinigan Bushland Reserve, Environment Protection Authority, Gippsland Water, Advance Morwell and Morwell North residents.

Latrobe City’s chief executive officer, Paul Buckley, said that the group has been formed as the result of Council’s decision to utilise waste to complete the pending rehabilitation of the Morwell Landfill located in Maryvale Road, Morwell North.

"The formation of the committee reinforces Latrobe City’s commitment to only accepting waste at the Morwell Landfill site for two years. The committee’s input into the final design and ultimate use of the resulting rehabilitated site will ensure that the land parcel is utilised to its full potential," Mr Buckley said.

Latrobe City’s manager waste services, Matthew Peake, said that in order to see the site’s potential, the committee was taken on an inspection of an active and former landfill site.

"The committee went to the Moe landfill to visualise the operation being completed there and then onto the rehabilitated Yallourn North landfill site.

"This particular site clearly demonstrates the potential use of a former landfill site. A careful, considered design can ensure that a rehabilitated landfill blends into the existing environment. The Yallourn North site has been constructed into a dome shape to prevent water from collecting on top. The water runs off into a collecting pond, which is regularly monitored for quality.

"By taking the consultative committee on this tour, we were able to impress on the representatives the importance of design and the long-term investment that council will make in terms of future monitoring of the site," Mr Peake explained.

Mr Peake added that the group resolved to meet monthly during the early stages of the operation and would be attending site meetings to monitor progress.

Mr Buckley said that this was a great opportunity for the key stakeholders to see the possibilities with rehabilitation of landfill sites.

"Now that the committee has seen other sites that have been successfully rehabilitated, we hope that this will stimulate some innovative uses for the Morwell North site in the future. We want to encourage clear communication and consultation during this important phase of operations at Morwell North.

"It is important that Council staff remains accessible during this rehabilitation process, and that members of the committee are included at every stage," Mr Buckley concluded.
