Council to develop better support system for young families

By South Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd September 2004 - Back to News

The South Gippsland Shire Council has resolved to develop a Municipal Early Years’ Plan (MEYP) that will result in a more comprehensive, coordinated family centred service system. The Plan will focus on services that supports families with children aged 0- 6 years.

Consistent with the model developed by the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV), the plan will link with Council’s other organisational strategic plans and will be developed and driven by a MEYP Council Task Force, in consultation with the community and key stakeholders.

It is expected to be completed by December 2004.

"It is an exciting opportunity to map key support services for young families administered by Council and external agencies across the Shire," said Ms Stacee Sherriff, Senior Manager Community Services. " It will also help identify any service gaps and opportunities to attract funding to fill these gaps."

Strong research based evidence has highlighted the importance of the first years of life as being crucial in setting the stage for later life and affecting children’s ongoing vulnerability and resilience.

In Victoria, the implementation of Municipal Early Years Plans is a result of an agreement made between the Municipal Association of Victoria (MAV) and the Department of Human Services (DHS) as part of the Maternal & Child Health Strategic Framework 2003-2004. It is also a requirement of Council’s funding agreement with DHS to develop a plan.
