Shire steps-up fire prevention campaign

Wellington Shire Council is keen to ensure the shire’s towns are kept safe from fires this summer as it calls on property owners to keep their land clear during the fire season.

By Wellington Shire Council - 3rd December 2004 - Back to News

The council will begin property inspections in the coming weeks and issue fire prevention notices to owners of seriously overgrown land which presents a potential fire risk. Those targeted will be given up to 21 days to cut, slash and clear their land.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "We would like to remind all landholders that when their land is unkempt it poses a great risk not only to themselves, but to the community as a whole. With the late start to this year’s fire season there is more growth to contend with, so we will be working hard across the shire to contact all owners of properties that need attention.

"In addition to our regular schedule of roadside maintenance we also have several contractors slashing roadside areas which have been identified as strategic fire breaks in the Council’s Municipal Fire Prevention Plan.

"The council uses mapping software and special global positioning equipment to identify blocks of land that require a fire prevention notice, which helps ensure that we can respond rapidly and provide good protection to our community."
