Community To Welcome V8 Supercars

Race enthusiasts and Bass Coast residents have the opportunity to meet drivers and get up close to vehicles that will be racing in the Phillip Island round of the V8 Supercar series.

By Bass Coast - 10th September 2010 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Events Coordinator, Frank Angarane, said the drivers would be signing autographs and speaking with community members on Thursday, 9 September.

"This is a new opportunity for the community to be involved with the V8 Supercar event and meet racing personalities off the track," said Mr Angarane.

"Most people don’t get the opportunity to get up close to high powered racing vehicles, so it’s a great opportunity to come down and see what it’s all about.

"An area in Thompson Avenue will be set aside to accommodate Supercars, drivers and other support event vehicles like minis and superbikes."

The vehicles will be set up around Pino’s Trattoria from 5.00pm. The street will be closed in the immediate area to accommodate the vehicles and for the safety of the public in that area.

"We will be keeping road closures to the immediate area to minimise the disruption to traffic," continued Mr Angarane.

Entertainment is planned in the evening on Saturday, 11 September with local bands Smashinator and Vampire Boogie performing at the bottom of Thompson Avenue.

Bass Coast residents are encouraged to come, enjoy some free entertainment and enjoy the atmosphere of the event.

Parking and Traffic

Mr Angarane said the recent wet weather may impact parking on the circuit: "We have developed a contingency parking plan, which will see all the available parking on circuit being used and then vehicles will be parked on roads around the circuit, particularly Gap Road South.

"We will also have the shuttle bus service running from Cowes and San Remo and we encourage people to use this," explained Mr Angarane

"Community Safety staff will be on hand to ensure that people are parking legally. We understand that the limited parking may be a concern, but we will be doing our best to minimise any disruptions."

Depending on crowd size, on Sunday, 12 September a one way and blue line operation will be in place from the circuit to the Anderson roundabout.

"As always, drivers need to be aware of additional traffic and to stay off the roads unless they need to be there," advised Mr Angarane.

"As it’s likely there will be limited parking at the circuit, drivers should also be aware that there may be cars parked on roadsides where you wouldn’t usually expect."
