Unique play area scoops national award

A unique environmental play area constructed by Wellington Shire Council at the corner of Lake Guthridge and Lake Guyatt in Sale has scooped a prestigious national award for innovation.

By Wellington Shire Council - 31st October 2003 - Back to News

It has won the Innovation in Playspace Design award from Parks and Leisure Australia – which represents the parks and recreation industry – with the judges impressed by the emphasis placed on stimulating children’s imagination and the strong environmental and cultural message.

Key features include:

  • aboriginal dugout canoes set into a dry creek bed, along with a scramble net and low timber bridge crossing the creek;
  • a children’s maze – constructed using marine plywood and incorporating murals painted by eight local schools;
  • Totem poles and wood-crafted creatures created by Geelong-based Viktor Cebergs, and steel pelicans by well-known Melbourne artist Matthew Fagan;
  • a boardwalk across the north east corner of Lake Guyatt;
  • an interpretative trail around Lake Guyatt which will be expanded in the future to include Lake Guthridge and the Botanic Gardens.

In addition a six-metre diameter sundial comprising sandstone blocks is being built at the site by pupils from Gippsland Grammar School and a six-metre high windmill is currently being installed which will drive water along the creek bed.

Said Wellington’s Chief Executive Officer Lyndon Webb: "This national award is great recognition for all the hard work put into this exciting and imaginative project by everyone involved, from Council staff to members of the local community and artists. It’s great to see such innovative ideas brought to life in such an exciting facility, which I’m sure will be much enjoyed by the young people of Wellington.

"The play area provides children with a great opportunity to learn something about their environment and culture in an informative, hands-on and fun way and is designed to prove just as stimulating to the whole family."

The site is set to be formally opened on Sunday 7 December, from 11am to 1.30pm.
