Parks’ snub costs regional tourism promotion

Independent Member for Gippsland East has severely criticised Parks Victoria for its lack of commitment to promoting tourism in the region.

By Craig Ingram - 15th December 2003 - Back to News

Mr Ingram’s comments follow a recent incident where a television crew was refused access to the Croajingolang National Park in far East Gippsland to film for a national television show.

"There needs to be a cultural change within Parks Victoria to accept that they do have an essential role in tourism promotion and development in Gippsland," Mr Ingram said.

"For some time I have been calling on the State Government to facilitate the development and retention of high standard tourism infrastructure to promote the industry in our region," Mr Ingram said.

"The role Parks Victoria plays in tourism continues to be severally criticised in East Gippsland.

"A film crew from a very popular national television travel show was recently refused permission by Parks Victoria to land at Point Hicks for the purpose of filming.

"Once again, Parks Victoria has shown its lack of commitment to promoting the natural attractions this region has to offer.

"This was a perfect opportunity that would have not cost a cent from their budget and would have provided the region with nationwide exposure.

"I have written to the Environment Minister, John Thwaites, to condone this action and re-enforced my previous calls for Parks Victoria to play a better role in tourist promotion.
