Positive outcome from Traralgon Bypass workshop

Council, business, farming and community representatives attended a VicRoads workshop dealing with the proposed Traralgon Bypass alignment.

Council, business, farming and community representatives attended a VicRoads workshop last Friday to create a strategy for dealing with the proposed Traralgon Bypass alignment.

Latrobe City Councillor, Graeme Bond, one of three Latrobe City representatives at the workshop, called the workshop extremely positive, welcoming the consultation process.

"The Traralgon Bypass Planning Study is currently being undertaken by VicRoads to select a route for a future Princes Highway bypass of Traralgon," Cr Bond explained.

"While a bypass is not expected to be needed for many years, as the through traffic volumes on the Princes Highway in Traralgon are relatively low, Traralgon is continuing to grow, and there needs to be discussion of a route should a bypass be required in the future," Cr Bond said.

"A consultative group has been established to advise VicRoads about the issues, and ensure any proposed route reflects the community’s needs and expectations and that group attended a workshop last week.

"As just one of the many representatives attending, I was impressed with the way everyone worked together and came up with ideas which will help identify and deal with the issues affecting selection of a potential route," Cr Bond said.

"Latrobe City Council welcomes the consultation process. As representatives of local government we are very aware that discussion about a bypass goes back even as far as the 1970’s and has always aroused significant community interest. VicRoad’s recent announcement that a Bypass Planning Study would be undertaken, naturally aroused significant interest in the issue again.

"Last week’s workshop provided Council, farmers, power station interests, business interests and the community at large, with an opportunity to familiarise themselves on the proposal and participate in the strategy for dealing with the issues involved for the benefit of the entire community," Cr Bond concluded.
