New litter traps ready for the rain

The Baw Baw Shire has introduced a new initiative to tackle stormwater pollution. Six "Gross Pollutant Traps" have been installed in Drouin and Warragul to capture litter and sediment washed through gutters and stormwater drains.

Stormwater pollution kills plants and animals in our waterways as well as growing bacteria that poses a health threat to humans. Tonnes of litter from the environment including cigarette butts, silt, plastic, leaves and other hazardous material can now easily be removed before it gets into our water ways with "Gross Pollutant Traps".

Four traps have been installed in Warragul at the Queen Street drain outfall north of the railway line; behind the Bowling Club downstream of the railway line; in Bowen Street near St Paul’s School; and at the Brooker Park Wetland west of Charles Street.

Two traps have been installed in Drouin, at Alex Goudie Park and at the Fuhrmann Court drain outlet, downstream of Hopetoun Road.

The litter traps were partly funded through the State Government Victorian Stormwater Action Program. The Baw Baw Shire Council matched this grant.

Baw Baw Shire Mayor, Cr Ruth McDonald said that during the development of the Shire’s Stormwater Management Plan, litter was identified as a major threat to the health of our waterways.

"Every time it rains, water running along our streets picks up litter which ends up in our creeks and rivers, unless it can be diverted and trapped," Cr McDonald said.

"The new litter traps will prevent a great deal of this rubbish from ever leaving the urban area and entering Baw Baw’s waterways.

"Everyone in the community has a part to play in reducing the amount of rubbish and pollution that is carried into stormwater drains.

"We can all prevent litter from ever entering gutters and drains by ensuring we don’t litter in the first place. It is far more effective to stop the problem at its source than try and treat the result," Cr McDonald added.

The commissioning of the litter traps was one of a number of strategies identified in the Stormwater Management Plan, ranging from site specific treatment measures to strategies that addressed wider catchment issues such as the creation of a wetlands in Warragul and Drouin and educational activities.
