Local Kids Say Enjoy It…Don’T Spoil It

Local teenagers have joined forces with Bass Coast Shire Council to encourage people to look after Bass Coast and its attractions.

Keely, Georgia, Damon and Dylan are the faces of Council’s latest "Enjoy it, don’t spoil it…" campaign.

The annual campaign aims to highlight the natural attractions of the area, while reminding people to care for these so everyone can enjoy the holiday period.

"We love that this place, especially the beach," said Dylan. "It’s so natural and unspoiled."

"Nobody wants to see it getting wrecked and we’re happy to help get that message out to all visitors and holiday makers."

The four teenagers demonstrated their commitment, braving an icy spring day on Smiths Beach for the photo shoot.

"The shots look really summery and great, but it was actually a really windy, cold day," admitted Dylan.

The photographs will feature on postcards and posters promoting the campaign, as well as Council’s website. Local businesses, cafes, caravan parks and real estate agents are also supporting the campaign by helping to distribute posters and postcards.

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Community and Economic Development Director, Patti Wenn, said Council was working closely with the local community to manage the impact of summer visitors.

"Every summer people flock to Bass Coast, swelling the population from 29000 to over 70000," explained Ms Wenn.

"So we decided to use local voices to highlight what our community values and encourage everyone to respect this.

"We want people to have a great time when they are here on holidays, but it’s important not to spoil things for everyone else."

The "Enjoy It, don’t spoil it …" campaign carries a clear message on what is not allowed in Bass Coast.

"We want to make it clear to everyone that it is illegal to drink in the streets or on the beaches and we won’t tolerate unreasonably loud parties that disturb the neighbourhood," stressed Ms Wenn.

"People need to understand that they must organise overnight accommodation, as you cannot sleep in your car. You need a permit for camping and campfires and you are not allowed to light a fire on the beach at any time.

"These are not just rules for the sake of rules. They are designed to keep people safe, protect the environment and make sure that one person’s enjoyment doesn’t impact negatively on people around them.

"For example, we don’t want rowdy or drunken behaviour on our streets or beaches, so that everyone can enjoy these public spaces. We don’t want anyone going to the beach to cut their feet on beer bottles left after a party."

While the focus of the campaign is education, there is a strong enforcement component as well.

"The "Enjoy it, don’t spoil it…" postcards list exactly what the penalties are," confirmed Ms Wenn.

"Our Community Safety Rangers and local Police will issue fines to anyone who breaches our local laws."
