Residents Urged Not To Recycle Ceramics

East Gippsland residents are being urged no to put broken ceramic cups, saucers or plates into their recycling bins.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 17th August 2006 - Back to News

Shire waste management coordinator Megan Dennett says these items cause disruption at a $10 million automated recycling plant in Laverton where the region’s broken glass is sent.

"A piece of ceramic the size of a 50 cent piece can contaminate an entire load of recyclable glass," Ms Dennett said.

"While the automated glass facility has a range of ceramic, stone and porcelain detectors it operates most efficiently when this material is not put into its system."

Ms Dennett said the Shire has been asked to encourage residents not to dispose of ceramics this way.

"It can cause increased costs to the Shire that in turn may need to be passed on to ratepayers."

Ms Dennett said the best way to dispose of ceramic items was to wrap them in paper and palce in the household garbage bin.
