By Baw Baw Shire Council - 18th April 2006 - Back to News

Council’s Chief Executive Officer Mr Glenn Patterson said the Baw Baw Active Communities Walking Forum was a great success. "Over 40 people attended the forum with most towns across the shire represented."

Dr John Grant, who hosted the forum, also addressed agencies and Council about the benefits of implementing a walking strategy for the Shire.

"Dr Grant’s key message is about improving the opportunities to make walking functional," said Mr Patterson. "He explained that functional walking is walking done in order to get business completed.

"There are many areas we need to think about in order to improve functional walking for everyone including those with disabilities, the aged, the frail, parents with prams and children. We hope when the walking strategy is developed it will help us do this successfully," said Mr Patterson.

Attendees were given the opportunity to raise areas of concern. Concerns voiced by residents tended to be similar and have the potential to be improved through policy change. The issues raised will be used when developing the Baw Baw Walking Strategy.

The Baw Baw Active Communities Network will be developing a walking strategy with the assistance of Dr. John Grant, to cover aspects of walking relevant to Baw Baw Shire.
