Community feedback wanted on draft Social and Affordable Housing Strategy from South Gippsland Council
Council seeks community feedback on draft Social and Affordable Housing Strategy to ensure South Gippslanders can afford a home.
Council has developed a draft Social and Affordable Housing to help advocate for additional affordable housing support and investment in South Gippsland. To ensure the objectives listed in the Strategy align with community expectations, a community consultation period is now open until Friday 10 June.
Draft Social and Affordable Housing Strategy was created to give opportunity for everyone to have a place they can call home
Affordable housing strategy
The Strategy was developed after research indicated that there were over 1,000 households in housing stress in South Gippsland Shire. Housing stress is when 30 per cent or more of the household income is spent on housing, leaving limited income for other expenses like food, transport, health, education and utilities.
The Strategy proposes actions such as the development of an advocacy program to seek funding for affordable housing from the state and federal governments, and planning scheme amendments to incorporate the Affordable Housing Strategy into the South Gippsland Planning Scheme.
Community members are encouraged to complete a short survey on the Strategy or to provide a written or online submission. You can find out more at Social and Affordable Housing Strategy web page.
Send your feedback
South Gippsland Shire Council Mayor, Mohya Davies said, "The number of people experiencing housing stress in South Gippsland Shire is very concerning. We hope that by developing this Strategy we can start a conversation in our community about affordable housing and how we can provide support to those who need it."
"We want to make sure we are on the right path though, so I would encourage anyone with an interest in this area to give us your feedback by sending in a submission or completing a survey." Mayor Davies said.
