Ingram Calls For Wy Yung Road To Be Flood-Proofed

The Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, is calling for major works to be carried out on the Wy Yung Road to raise the road surface to a level where it can still remain open to traffic in times of moderate flooding.

By Craig Ingram - 9th September 2010 - Back to News

Mr Ingram has written to the Minister for Roads and Ports, after the road was closed on

Monday due to moderate flooding of the Mitchell River, causing major traffic flow problems.

"Because the road was closed, traffic from the Wy Yung district and Eastwood estate was

diverted to the Great Alpine Road, which placed heavy demand at the Lucknow roundabout

where it joins the Princes Highway.

"Traffic was banked up for kilometres in several directions during peak periods, which

highlights the importance of Wy Yung Road as an important thoroughfare for the district.

"I have requested that VicRoads investigates the feasibility of raising the road surface on

culverts or piers from the base of Foards Hill to the Lind Bridge.

"I have also raised the need for the Lind Bridge to be widened on several occasions with

VicRoads, incorporating a purpose-built walkway to link the popular walking track on both

sides of the Mitchell River at Wy Yung.

"The population growth of the Wy Yung district and Eastwood estate along with the

establishment of two schools has resulted in a much higher traffic volume along the road in

recent years.

"While I acknowledge this is a traditional area of flooding, the growth of this area dictates

that the time has come to find sensible solutions to ensure that this busy road

can remain open during moderate flooding," Mr Ingram concluded.
