Cricket Club scores a hit through Community Grants

A project funded through Latrobe City Council’s 2003/2004 Community Grants program has proven a big hit with the players and committee members of the Ex Students Cricket Club in Traralgon.

Club President, Kevin Foley said that the construction of the club’s new practice facility at the Traralgon Recreation Reserve, comprising three hard wicket nets and two turf nets could not have been achieved without the grant.

"During the off season, we constructed the new hard wicket training nets which have proved to be much more user friendly than the previous ones. Most practice nets consist of hard metal netting around and over metal poles. This makes batting in the nets quite difficult, as you are constantly facing rebounding balls.

"With the new nets, we have been able to use soft netting which makes training safer and more enjoyable for those using them. In fact, we now have many more people turning up for training sessions and our junior numbers have increased by approximately 30 per cent," Mr Foley said.

Mr Foley said that the majority of the work to construct the new nets was done by club members on a voluntary basis. "Help was required for the concreting, but the excavation and placing of the poles was done by the club," Mr Foley explained.

"We also fundraised to make up the shortfall needed to cover the costs. We held comedy nights and other fundraising activities over a number of seasons to ensure that we would be able to install the new practice facility.

"Apart from Latrobe City, we’d like to acknowledge Bahcon Steel, Loy Yang Power, Readymix Concrete, Warragul Sheet Metal, Eastern Constructions and Moreland Hire for their assistance with our project," Mr Foley said.

Councillor Peter Tyler commended the initiative used in constructing the practice facility. "By using stow-away nets that can be put into place or retracted in seconds, the club has created a very practical solution for a complex problem. I’m impressed with the result and I’m sure my fellow Councillors agree the club has used their grants money wisely," Cr Tyler said.

Latrobe City Councillor Lisa Proctor said that the Community Grant scheme has helped make plans and dreams become a reality for many local sports and community organisations.

"For many clubs and groups, having access to Council funding has really made a difference. Many committees can plan and fundraise to ensure projects are at least on the drawing board, but with the Community Grants program, those plans can come to fruition," Cr Proctor concluded.

Applications from community groups, for grants to be made under Latrobe City’s 2004/2005 Community Grants Program are currently invited. The deadline for receiving applications is 5pm on Friday 17 September 2004.

Application forms are available from Council’s Citizen Service Centres at Moe, Morwell and Traralgon, by telephoning 1300 367 700 or accessing the City’s webpage, www.latrobe.vic.gov.au.
