Recycling Gas Bottles

Wellington Shire Council has announced that arrangements have been made for the recycling of used gas bottles.

By Wellington Shire Council - 9th February 2007 - Back to News

"This is a new initiative by Council to help residents dispose of out of date or unwanted gas bottles," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"Gas bottles have been a problem because of the danger of potential gas residue in the containers," said Cr Ripper.

"Waste facilities were unwilling to accept them, so they sit in homes and sheds or are inappropriately dumped or hidden in other waste."

Wellington Shire Council has now sourced a contractor to take the bottles for recycling.

Gas bottles up to 9kg will be accepted free of charge at all waste facilities in the shire. Gas bottles over 9kg (including automotive gas tanks) will also be accepted at all waste facilities but will incur a small handling fee of $12.50.

All gas bottles will be accepted including those with taps or unused gas.

"The good news for the environment is that these bottles will be re-tested and re-used if suitable, otherwise they will be recycled as scrap steel," said Cr Ripper.

Further information on the gas bottle recycling initiative can be obtained by phoning Wellington Shire Council on 1300 366 244.
