Ingram Backs Seafood Labelling Change

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has backed calls by the commercial fishing industry to further expand country of origin labelling for seafood sold in Victoria.

By Craig Ingram - 25th October 2010 - Back to News

"As a strong supporter of the local seafood industry, I believe it is essential that consumers know where the seafood originates from, so they are aware they are buying local seafood or a product from overseas," Mr Ingram said.

"While fresh food sold in retail stores is required to display country of origin labels, calls have been made to extend this to restaurants and associated food outlets.

"A large portion of seafood sold in Australia is imported and much of the imported product originates from countries without the same food safety and quality assurance that we have in Australia. "Our local commercial fishing industry is incredibly important to our region’s economy, but is often undercut in the market place with cheap, inferior imported seafood.

"Gippslanders all know our seafood is of a world-quality standard and it is important from an economic perspective to ensure our local produce is on an equal playing field. "If re-elected in November, I will advocate having country of origin labelling for seafood extended to ensure consumers have the appropriate information to make a clear choice on what they are purchasing.

"If state or federal governments do not agree to implement this measure, I will introduce legislation to provide our local seafood industry with the required outcome," Mr Ingram
