Path on track for completionBass Coast Shire Council’s Phillip Island shared path project is now a step closer to connecting the existing pathway network from Cowes to Wonthaggi. Read full details. By Portal Admin - 12th August 2016 - Back to News Bass Coast Shire Council’s Phillip Island shared path project is one step closer to connecting the existing pathway network from Cowes to Wonthaggi, with the completion of Stage 3 of $1.1 million project.
Now open to the public, the recently completed 1.3km section connects Clifford Road and the Anderson bus interchange, where it links with the Bass Coast Rail Trail.
Completion of this section has also allowed the fourth and final stage between Potters Hill Road and the existing footpath at Panorama Drive in San Remo to begin, with works anticipated to be completed by December this year, weather permitting.
Anderson Ward Councillor, Bradley Drew, walked the new section recently to inspect the finished project and enjoy the stunning ocean views across Westernport Bay.
He acknowledged that there had been a lot of commentary from the community around the path during its construction.
"It’s been called ‘The Path to Nowhere’ and ‘The Path to Somewhere’, but at the end of the day, this is a great outcome for the community," Cr Drew said.
"It’s been a $1.1 million project funded by the State Government and a small contribution from Council and, overall, what we’re seeing today and with the new part going on, it’s going to be an asset for future generations and our community.
"Whilst yes, we hear the commentary around the path to nowhere, the facts are that it is going somewhere and it’s an asset that will remain forever in a day."
The works involved the construction of 2.5 metre wide shared gravel and concrete path, with incorporated drains to divert rainwater away from the path.
In accordance with current standards, the project also included installation of fencing, bollards or handrails at appropriate locations along the path.
Cr Drew said Council investigated a wide range of cost-effective design alternatives, taking into consideration the native vegetation in the area.
"I’m very happy that this has allowed this stage to be delivered within budget, whilst meeting road safety measures and requiring minimal vegetation removal," Cr Drew said.
Council appointed local contractors, SR Excavations Pty Ltd, to build this section using local suppliers and staff.
The total cost for Stage 3 was $420,000, with the project funded through grants from the Victorian Government Regional Growth Fund via the Local Government Infrastructure Program, and Council.
