Ingram Condemns Criminal Acts Targeting Commercial Fishermen

The Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has condemned a campaign of criminal behaviour targeting commercial fishermen who operate on the Gippsland Lakes.

By Craig Ingram - 21st April 2009 - Back to News

"Several local commercial fishermen have contacted me after receiving threatening letters and telephone calls from anonymous sources," Mr Ingram said.

"This behaviour has intensified and the offenders are now committing acts of vandalism on the equipment being used by commercial operators.

"While the sources have attempted to remain anonymous, anyone who owns a fishing rod would hate to think that these self-appointed vigilantes have taken it upon themselves to represent the views of all recreational fishermen.

"These commercial fishermen have a legal right to be on the lakes earning a living and they should not be subjected to criminal behaviour by radicals.

"This behaviour is totally unacceptable and should not be condoned".

Mr Ingram said local police are investigating the criminal matters and urged anyone with relevant information to contact their local police station or telephone CrimeStoppers on 1800 333 000.

On a more positive note, Mr Ingram said visitors to our region over the Easter period will be well catered for.

"The Gippsland Lakes are the healthiest they have been in years and from all reports the fish are in abundance," Mr Ingram concluded.
