Bass Coast Wins Victorian Community Event Of The Year

The Bass Coast Baton Relay has won the award for the Victorian Sport and Recreation Community Event of the year.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 16th October 2006 - Back to News

The award and a $4,000 prize were presented to Bass Coast Shire Council by the Minister for Sport and Recreation, Justin Madden MLC, last night.

The Bass Coast Baton Relay was held in November last year as part of the Shire’s warm up events for the 2006 Commonwealth Games.

Council’s Arts and Recreation Coordinator and Relay organiser, Jenny Churchill, said that given the Queen’s Baton Relay was only stopping in a few towns, the Shire wanted to do its own relay that reached the whole area.

"Around 500 local residents participated in the Relay and hundreds more cheered them on," she said.

"I want to thank the many Council, YMCA and community volunteers involved in coordinating such a major event.

"I would also like to thank the many Relay participants, who made the day such a worthwhile one.

"This is something the whole Shire can be very proud of," Ms Churchill continued.

Council will be distributing a certificate and DVD of the event to all Relay participants on the one year anniversary in November this year.

"Originally planned as a one-off event, the response was so positive we are considering similar events every two years to coincide with future Olympic and Commonwealth Games," Ms Churchill added.
