Coalition Must Back Legislation To Return High Country

Independent Member for Gippsland East, Craig Ingram, has challenged the coalition to fully back his calls for a legislated return of cattle grazing in the Victorian High Country.

By Craig Ingram - 18th October 2010 - Back to News

"As a strong supporter of the mountain cattlemen and their issues, I believe that the coalition must go further than their current position of using obscure regulatory measures, which would be almost impossible to implement," Mr Ingram said. "Labor introduced legislation to remove grazing -- which I opposed -- and it will take legislative change by the coalition to return it.

"At a recent meeting with the Mountain Cattlemen’s Association of Victoria, I

committed to fully supporting a policy of returning grazing and provided cattlemen with a briefing paper on why the coalition’s pledge is not up to scratch and must be improved.

"At that meeting, I committed to back legislation to return licences -- something that the coalition has not been brave enough to publicly commit to doing as it may affect the preference deal they are planning with Melbourne-based Greens.

"I call on the coalition to match my commitment to the mountain cattlemen and release policy requiring the necessary legislative change," Mr Ingram said.
