Input Sought To Develop Land Stewardship Information PackLatrobe City is seeking community input into the development of a land stewardship information pack. By Latrobe City - 2nd February 2007 - Back to News In calling for input from landowners and those interested in land management practices, Latrobe City mayor, Cr Tony Zimora, said the information pack being developed would assist the community with best-practice land management and promote Latrobe City to the wider world.
"Landholders are under increasing pressure. They are having to cope with changes in the natural environment resulting from global warming, such as drought and increased fire danger. They have to comply with new and more complex regulations, such as on water use, native vegetation clearance and building in bush-fire prone areas," Cr Zimora said.
"Not least, there is an increasingly urgent need for landholders to assist in maintaining the basic ecosystem services we rely on for life. The air we breathe, the water we drink, and the soil we grow our food in are all critical to our future wellbeing," Cr Zimora explained.
"Many community groups and landholders in Latrobe City, from farmers to rural residents, are already doing excellent work to achieve a sustainable environment. For those who would like to share their successes, it would be wonderful to celebrate their achievements and make everybody more aware of them.
"To that end, Latrobe City is asking for community input in identifying what information landowners need in the land stewardship information pack, how best to present it to them, and examples of best practice residents are aware of in Latrobe City," Cr Zimora said.
Latrobe City’s strategic planning coordinator, Allison Taylor, said in developing the land stewardship information pack, Latrobe City is keen for the community to identify what topics it should cover. "We’d like to know what information landholders need most. Subject matter might include weed control, native vegetation regulations, fire plans, Strzelecki koalas, snakes, water saving, encouraging wildlife and controlling pests. Needs might also include practical ‘how to do it’ guides, technical background, contacts for further information, or sources of funding," Ms Taylor suggested.
"It is also important to establish what format it is best to produce the land stewardship pack in - such as a booklet, leaflets, fact-sheets or other.
"We would also like to include in the stewardship pack examples of best-practice land management that already exist in Latrobe City. Using our own community’s best practice is the best example for others, and will promote Latrobe City as a leading municipality in land management. Where the community makes suggestions in this regard, we will get the relevant landholder’s permission before we use their property as an example," Ms Taylor added.
