Traralgon South Preschool celebrates 20 years

Traralgon South Preschool celebrated its twenty year anniversary last week with a morning tea for the students, parents and teachers.

Preschool Director Donna Sinclair said that the children each brought in a plate of party food and enjoyed some outdoor activities and games to celebrate the preschool’s birthday.

"One of the parents provided a birthday cake and of course the children loved blowing out the candles," Ms Sinclair said.

"This year, our Preschool Assistant, Jenny DeGroot, returned to Traralgon South, having been the original assistant when the preschool first opened. Jenny has said how she fondly remembers the early days when, for the first two years, the preschool was held in the local hall and the children had a few old tyres to amuse themselves with. Things have certainly come a long way since then," Ms Sinclair explained.

"Since the current buildings were erected 18 years ago, the preschool has grown and is a full part of the local community. This is testament to the generous commitment and hard work of the parents, the Council and the Traralgon South community as a whole, over the past twenty years," Ms Sinclair said .

Ms Sinclair added that for next year’s twenty-first birthday celebrations, the current committee is planning to build a historical portrait of Traralgon South Preschool from its inception to the present day.

"We would like to ask any former students or parents of past students to provide photos, art work or other general memorabilia in order for us to prepare this exciting display.

"Local businesses who would like to donate to the raffle or party supplies for next year’s celebrations, or those with items for the display can contact Shelley Emerton, secretary, on 5166 1298," Ms Sinclair said.

Latrobe City Mayor, Councillor Bruce Lougheed congratulated the committee and staff of the preschool on the birthday celebrations and said that it was a sign of the commitment from both Council and local communities that rural preschools such as those in Traralgon South, were thriving in the municipality.

"We have six rural preschools in Latrobe City, in Yallourn North, Yinnar, Boolarra, Glengarry, Traralgon South and Tyers. These preschools are all well supported by the local community and the children really benefit from entering their early school career in a location close to home. They get to know other children from their area, and they may well go on to attend local primary schools together, forming long lasting friendships," Cr Lougheed concluded.
