Work To Repair Damaged Beach Access Tracks

Bass Coast Shire Council is working to address significant damage to several beach access tracks as a result of recent storms.

By Bass Coast - 15th August 2011 - Back to News

Bass Coast Shire Council’s Planing and Environment Director, Hannah Duncan-Jones, said that most of the damage was at the Inverloch Foreshore. The damage was caused by a combination of strong winds, high tides and the current location of the northern channel, which is very close to the shoreline of Anderson Inlet," explained Ms Duncan-Jones.

"As a result the waves removed large quantities of sand from the shore. In some areas this exposed the footings of beach access staircases and lookouts." In other areas the storms exposed rarely seen bluestone boulder seawalls.

"Where access tracks intersect these seawalls, pedestrians are now faced with the dangerous task of scrambling across the boulders in order to reach the beach," said Ms Duncan-Jones.
"This is a public safety hazard so Council’s immediate response has been to close some access tracks. However work is now underway to repair the damage and reopen the tracks." This week excavators placed sand and boulders around several sets of stairs and a lookout.

Ms Duncan-Jones described the Anderson Inlet as very dynamic. "The channels move around and sand comes and goes from the shoreline," she said. "What happened recently was a natural event, and we are not trying to compete against nature.

"Boulders are only used in areas where a seawall already exists. We have been repositioning these boulders so that they are more effective in protecting foreshore access structures. "In other situations it is about locating and designing access that is sympathetic to the natural conditions," Ms Duncan-Jones continued.

With damage to over twenty access tracks in Inverloch, it is expected that work will continue over the next few months.
