On Sunday 29 October 2006, Latrobe Regional Gallery will throw open its doors as part of the first ever Get into Art! open day event. If you have never visited your local public gallery before, this will be the perfect introduction.

By Latrobe City Council - 24th October 2006 - Back to News

Latrobe Regional Gallery’s acting curator, Sherryn Vardy said there would be a number of free activities at the Gallery.

"We will be offering a guided tour of the Gallery from 11.30am to 12noon, and the art detective will be on hand to challenge and entertain children from 11.30am to 12.30pm. At 1pm, Matthew Searle will give an artist’s floor talk and the Artcore exhibition launch will be held between 2.30pm and 4pm," Ms Vardy explained.

This inaugural open day event is coordinated by the Public Galleries Association of Victoria with major funding support from Arts Victoria. Mary Delahunty, Minister for the Arts said that thirty-six public galleries across Victoria are taking part.

"Wherever you live in Victoria you are never far from an outstanding public gallery. If you haven't visited your local gallery before, Sunday 29 October is the perfect starting point to enjoy getting into art," Ms Delahunty said.

Ms Vardy said that the Artcore exhibition launch of Are we revolting enough? would include a performance by the local band To Get the Girls and a launch of a DVD.

"The DVD is the result of a creative collaboration which crosses art forms and sub cultures. The DVD features the music clip of the Erica pop-punk outfit with visual art created on Artcore’s cyber tag machine by members of the public," Ms Vardy explained.

"The Artcore team is taking part in a young ambassadors program with the gallery and they have curated an exhibition using works from the LRG permanent collection to reflect what young people feel about the world and what they want to see at the gallery. A series of public programs have also been designed and delivered by the Artcore team. The programs cover badge making, stencilling wearable items and cyber tagging the gallery wall. All of these programs are designed to provide avenues for young people to consider, respond and creatively display their thoughts about the world," Ms Vardy explained.

To Get the Girls have been playing together since 2001. Guitarist/vocalist Angus Burns, bassist Justin Richards, drummer Adrian Van Bloom and guitarist Cassidy Van Bloom have made the most of their upbringings in the sleepy timber town of Erica, utilising the isolation as a means of honing in on their own unique style without too much outside influence.

The DVD and exhibition launch will be officiated by Shanrah Austin, of the National Gallery of Victoria. Shanrah was a participant of the NGV Young Ambassadors program and now holds a position on permanent staff as a youth access program assistant.

"Artists from the current exhibition The Falls Creek Artist Camp will also be in attendance during the open day. Other current exhibitions include Tony Hanning: A retrospective looking back over 25 years; After Oberon: Bruno Leti; and Bills, bells and ballots: 150 years of Victoria’s Parliament," Sherryn concluded.
