Bass Coast Shire Council’s Business Mentoring project received an award at a special presentation this week.

By Bass Coast Shire Council - 24th May 2007 - Back to News

The success of the project was acknowledged by a framed certificate presented to Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Neville Goodwin by The Hon. Greg Hunt.

The twelve month project, known as the South East Victorian Mentoring Project, was funded by AusIndustry "Building Entrepreneurship in Small Business Program" and run in partnership with Cardinia Shire and the City of Casey.

Cr Goodwin said he was delighted to receive the award.

"This project has been driven by Margaret Murray, our Small Business Development Officer, and has been a resounding success," said Cr Goodwin.

"A total of 63 businesses took part, which included 20 from the Bass Coast area.

"The idea was to encourage our local businesses to look at new ways to develop, manage and market themselves," continued Cr Goodwin.

"Small business operators are a vital part of our economy and a project such as this is just one of the many ways Council works to support them.

"Margaret and all the Economic Development Team should be congratulated for their hard work."

Cr Goodwin also congratulated the businesses who took part.

"The work you have all put in is already yielding results for your businesses, which is wonderful," said Cr Goodwin.

Over 240 one-on-one mentoring sessions took place during the Mentoring Project. The participating councils worked in partnership with the Small Business Counselling Service of Victoria, who assisted in providing over 20 mentors.

Council’s Small Business Development Officer, Margaret Murray said the work of the project officer Amy Petch was an invaluable part of the project.

"Amy really understood the value of business mentoring, "said Ms Murray.

"She was in small business herself and has a passion for mentoring and having her involved was certainly a great asset."

Ongoing assistance for the participating business will be provided by a new website www.biztobiz.com.au, which was developed as part of the project.

The Federal Member for Flinders was on hand to launch the site at a function at Koo Wee Rup on Tuesday night.

Three workshops will be run in Bass Coast to make the website available to the business public. The first workshop will be held at Chisholm TAFE in Wonthaggi on 22 May at 6pm.

The biztobiz project was part of the Innovation Gippsland Festival which is held throughout Gippsland in May.

Anyone wanting information on the workshops should contact Council’s Small Business Development Officer Margaret Murray on (03) 5671 2211 or (03) 5951 3311
