Bass Coast Shire Council has adopted a new Events Policy, which sets the direction of events in Bass Coast for the next three years.
Acting CEO, Danny Luna, said events promote the region, bring economic benefits for local businesses, and celebrate our diverse community.

"Events play a vital role in our community, so when we undertook a review of our Events Policy, we had a thorough consultation process. We invited event organisers, emergency services, community members and visitors to provide feedback about their event experiences and what they thought could be improved.

"We also used recommendations from two key reports to inform the review. A 2012 independent Audit of Events in Bass Coast Shire provided recommendations about strengthening event management processes. The recently commissioned Social and Economic Value of Events in Bass Coast report also provided valuable data.

"Council is committed to spreading events across the whole Shire and more evenly throughout the year," said Mr Luna.

"The new Events Policy provides the framework to deliver on this commitment. It identifies the importance of supporting community groups to hold events and reinforces Council’s strong commitment to facilitate this."

The 2012 Bass Coast Events Policy sets a framework to help maximise the economic, social and marketing benefits for the Shire while minimising their adverse impact.

The key objectives of the revised policy are:
1. To promote and encourage events in Bass Coast which enhance the resident, participant and visitor experience.
2. To set principles for determining the level of Council support for events.
3. To ensure that risks are minimised and there is compliance with regulatory requirements during events.
4. Provide a framework for the approval, communication and evaluation of events.

Events supported by Council in 2011 generated around $130 million for the Bass Coast economy . These also provided a major fund raising stream for many community groups and service clubs.
