Top Water Users To Use Less Water Under New Program

Gippsland Water’s top water users will now be required to use less water by developing and implementing a water management plan.

By Gippsland Water - 6th September 2007 - Back to News

Under a new Victorian Government initiative, industrial and commercial businesses within Gippsland who use more than 10 million litres of treated water per annum will be required to submit a Water Management Action Plan (WaterMAP) before the end of the year.

The WaterMAP program will identify how a customer currently uses its water, opportunities for saving water on site, actions to implement water conservation measures, and costs to implement those actions.

Gippsland Water’s managing director John Mitchell said eligible customers across Gippsland Water’s service area will receive a letter from Gippsland Water outlining the program. Eligible customers are required to register their intention to submit a plan by 28 September 2007.

"Each customer will then need to submit a WaterMAP to Gippsland Water by 31 December, and provide an update of their progress each year," said Mr Mitchell.

"With water conservation a key part of Gippsland Water’s plan to secure our water supplies, we are committed to helping our local industry and businesses to use less water through this WaterMAP program, and we encourage them to better monitor their water use.

"The program has been introduced as part of the Permanent Water Saving Rules, which means penalties such as fines and restriction of water supply can be imposed for those who do not register for the program and develop a WaterMAP," Mr Mitchell concluded.

Customers eligible for the WaterMAP program will be able to register online on the Gippsland Water website at www.gippswater.com.au.

Customers may be eligible for state or federal funding to implement water conservation measures outlined in their plans. The Victorian Government recently announced a further $10 million for the Stormwater and Urban Recycling Fund, and $10 million for the Water for Industry Fund.
