Enthusiastic Response To Heritage Workshops

Cann River and Buchan are the locations for the next two in East Gippsland Shire Council’s series of workshops for the East Gippsland Heritage Study.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 22nd April 2004 - Back to News

The Cann River session will be held next Tuesday, 27 April 2004 starting at 7.00pm at the Community Centre and will focus on the far eastern part of the region – between Bemm River and Club Terrace and Genoa-Wangarabell.

The Buchan workshop will be held on Wednesday, 28 April from 11.00am at the Buchan Resource Centre and will cover the district from Timbarra and Buchan South north to Suggan Buggan and the NSW border.

Interested residents should contact Joanne Cannon at the Shire on 5153 9500 if they wish to attend.

Chair of the Steering Committee for the study, Cr Linette Treasure, said Councillors who attended the first two heritage workshops, at Lindenow and Bruthen, were delighted with the enthusiasm and interest shown by community members.

"We hope that the Cann River and Buchan sessions will receive a similar response as community involvement is vital.

"The study is trying to identify places that local people regard as their shared heritage and want to protect, as well as the sorts of places that might be identified by a professional historian or heritage architect.

"Heritage places may be important for many reasons, including social value, scientific characteristics, aesthetic qualities, or associations with famous people or events.

"We want to make sure that all these types of places are represented," Cr Treasure said.

The participants in the first two workshops - over 30 at Lindenow and 20 at Bruthen – listed the names, locations and basic details about places that may have heritage significance.

The study will collect more information about each place, evaluate all the places listed and make recommendations to the Shire about those warranting heritage protection.

The consultants, Context Pty Ltd, reported that 169 places were listed at the Lindenow workshop and 116 at Bruthen. Copies of the lists have been circulated to participants.

Tim Gibson, the Shire’s Local Heritage Co-ordinator, is working with the Lindenow group. He recently held a further session to map places listed at the workshop, which covered most of the old Bairnsdale Shire. Tim will also be working with the Buchan Heritage Group to follow up the results of the forthcoming workshop.

Context Pty Ltd is encouraging participants from the Bruthen workshop – covering the area between Bairnsdale, Bruthen and Lakes Entrance – to maintain their interest in the study and to provide further information.

Those attending the Cann River workshop will also have an opportunity for ongoing involvement.

All places listed during the study will be assessed against recognised heritage criteria and a short-list identified for protection under the East Gippsland Planning Scheme.

Places found to be of State significance will be proposed for listing on the Victorian Heritage Register.

Owners of properties proposed for listing will be contacted before decisions are made to proceed.
