Newborough East Early Learning Victoria centre boosts childcare access and supports families growth in Latrobe City growthNewborough East Early Learning Victoria centre under construction will expand childcare access, support families, and deliver kinder programs for up to 130 children daily. By news@gippsland - 12th June 2026 - Back to News The Allan Labor Government is making it easier for local families to access quality early learning and childcare, with a new government-operated Early Learning Victoria centre under construction at Newborough East Primary School. Member for Eastern Victoria, Harriet Shing, visited the site at Newborough East Primary School to celebrate the future centre, which will be operated by Early Learning Victoria and provide high-quality education and childcare for local children.
The centre provides childcare, health services, play spaces and kinder, improving access, convenience, and extended kindergarten hours from 2028 New childcare centreThe centre will offer long day care and Three- and Four-Year-Old Kindergarten programs, with capacity for up to 130 children each day. Designed to support children and families, the new facility will include outdoor play areas, a car park, a consulting room for child and family services such as maternal and child health and allied health, and a multi-purpose room for community meetings and playgroups. Building the centre at Newborough East Primary School will help make childcare and early learning more accessible and convenient for working parents and carers, reducing the need for multiple drop-offs and supporting a smoother transition to school. The centre will also support the rollout of additional hours of Four-Year-Old Kindergarten in the Latrobe City Council area from 2028. Eligible children will be able to access between 16 and 20 hours of Four-Year-Old Kindergarten each week. This project forms part of the Allan Labor Government's investment of more than $3.8 billion in early childhood infrastructure since the 2015–16 State Budget. The investment is supporting the delivery of the Victorian Government's Best Start, Best Life reforms, ensuring more Victorian children can access high quality early learning and care close to home. Early learning investmentMinister for Children Lizzie Blandthorn said, "We’re proud to be funding early childhood infrastructure because we know how important the early years are in setting our children up for the rest of their lives." Member for Eastern Victoria Harriet Shing said, "This new centre will make such a positive difference for local families, with quality early learning and childcare services close to school. Co-locating early learning services with schools helps create stronger connections for children and families, while supporting a smoother transition into primary school, and it makes pick up and drop off that little bit easier for families with more than one child." "We're determined to give kids right across Gippsland the best possible start in life, with modern learning facilities and the support services that families need, closer to home," said Ms Shing.
