Community Input Sought For Review Of Soccer Facilities

A public meeting will be held at the Latrobe City corporate headquarters in Commercial Road, Morwell on Wednesday 5 December at 7pm as part of the consultation process to review soccer facilities in the municipality.

Latrobe City’s mayor, Councillor Tony Zimora said that interest in soccer had taken off since the World Cup last year, with participation at all levels of the game on the increase.

"To address this growth, Latrobe City is undertaking a plan to review the current state of soccer in the municipality, and is looking at ways to help the game continue to grow and prosper.

"The increase in participation has placed additional pressures on the existing infrastructure, with many facilities in the area constructed at a time when provision of facilities for junior and female participants was not considered. We need to ensure that our soccer clubs are able to cater for all levels of the sport and this review will look at facility usage levels, membership numbers and trends, current issues and future priorities," Cr Zimora explained.

"The soccer development plan will provide a coordinated approach to identifying and addressing the needs of soccer at a local and municipal level. The plan will also provide a future direction for the sport in Latrobe City, to ensure the growth of soccer and demand for provision is catered for in a strategic manner," Cr Zimora said.

Latrobe City Council’s recreation manager, Ian Murphy said that there were nine soccer clubs, 18 public soccer pitches and two private facilities in Latrobe City, located in Churchill, Newborough, Moe, Morwell, Traralgon and Tyers.

"An important part of the soccer development plan will be community input. Council and the appointed consultancy team would therefore like to hear from everyone who has an interest in the future of soccer in Latrobe City. "Clubs, associations, players, spectators, coaches and officials are all invited to become involved. In addition, individuals who have an interest in the sport, or who use local facilities on a casual basis can also contribute to the plan.

"We would encourage the soccer community and anyone who would like to contribute to this project to attend the public meeting on 5 December. Surveys will also be sent to local soccer clubs for their input," Mr Murphy concluded.

Residents and clubs are also invited to forward submissions by mail to The Recreation Manager, Latrobe City Council, PO Box 264 Morwell 3840
