Island NYE could go off with a bangFireworks could return to New Year’s Eve celebrations on Phillip Island in 2017 after Bass Coast Shire Council endorsed a plan from the Phillip Island New Year’s Eve Working Group at this week’s meeting. By Portal Admin - 26th June 2017 - Back to News The Working Group, which was established in February this year, asked for Council support for a 9.30pm fireworks display from the Cowes Jetty, subject to Parks Victoria approval, as well as a piazza style street event, subject to permit approval.
Bass Coast Mayor, Cr Pamela Rothfield, said the management of New Year’s Eve events in Cowes had been an ongoing issue for Council and the community for many years.
"It’s been fantastic to have representatives from the wider Cowes community be a part of the Working Group and take the thoughts and concerns of many into consideration when planning this year’s event," Cr Rothfield said.
"We’re looking forward to seeing a reinvigorated event in Cowes to bring in what will be a very big year for the Island, which is celebrating its sesquicentennial anniversary later in 2018."
Council will provide $13,000 for the event, which will include the fireworks if approved, security, first aid and other associated costs.
