Keep Our Roads And Recreational Areas Clean

Bass Coast Shire Council is asking for the community to help keep roadways and public areas in the Shire clean.

Increasingly pruning, grass clippings, building rubble, asbestos and chemical waste is being found in rear access laneways or in areas next to Council managed reserves.

Council’s Infrastructure Director, Steven Piasente, said that this was a both a health concern and a cost burden for the community.

"Our outdoor staff receive a lot of requests to attend to long grass, cut back vegetation and generally maintain rear access and recreational areas," explained Mr Piasente.

"This is becoming increasingly difficult as people continue to dump their rubbish in these public areas.

"It makes it a bigger job for our crews, which increases their work load and ultimately, the cost to the community. It can also create health concerns for other residents."

All residential or commercial waste must be disposed of at an appropriate waste management facility. Council is asking the community to report any instances of people leaving rubbish in road reserves, rear access lane or recreational areas.

"It is an offence under the Road Management Act 2004 and Council’s Local Laws to put your waste in a public area," confirmed Mr Piasente.

"The Act allows us to recover the costs associated with removing the rubbish from the person who was responsible."

Transfer Stations at Grantville, Rhyll and Wonthaggi are open seven days a week, from 8.30am until 4.30pm. The Inverloch Transfer Station is open Saturday, Sunday and Monday.

A free green waste disposal service is offered at the start of summer every year. You will also be able to book a hard waste collection from 1 July 2009 by contacting Council. A small fee is likely to apply for the hard waste service. Each year, Sustainability Victoria organises a disposal day for unwanted household chemicals.

"There are a number of options for disposing of any waste material appropriately and it is very important that people do this," said Mr Piasente.

"If you need advice on how best to dispose of rubbish, please talk to our Waste Management team or call the Infrastructure Maintenance Department on 1300 BCOAST (226 278)."
