New And Improved Community Facilities For East Gippsland

New and enhanced community facilities are now planned as a result of the adoption of the East Gippsland Shire Council Plan and Budget.

By East Gippsland Shire Council - 3rd July 2006 - Back to News

Shire CEO Steve Kozlowski said the Council Plan and Budget contained provision for completion of the upgrade to the Bairnsdale Aquatic and Recreation Centre.

"The near million-dollar project will include the upgrade of lighting, heating and air-conditioning of the auditorium together with new seating and improved access for all," he said.

"A new child care facility will also be established at the venue that will be jointly funded by the Shire and the State Government’s Community Facilities Fund."

Mr Kozlowski said the iconic pedestrian footbridge at Cunninghame Arm will be replaced within the next three years at an estimated cost of $1.49 million and include significant external funding.

"The project will ensure that emergency vehicles as well as pedestrians will be able to safely use the bridge," he said.

The budget also provides for:

  • improved car parking facilities in Bairnsdale and Lakes Entrance to alleviate concerns in their central business areas;

  • Bairnsdale City Oval Pavilion to be upgraded into a full regional facility to accommodate sporting clubs and the Bairnsdale Senior Citizens at a cost of $1,193,000;

  • Bonang Hall to be refurbished at a cost of $75,000;

  • a three year program to bring all of the ‘priority buildings’ the Shire owns or controls into compliance in accordance with new Essential Services regulations at a cost of $1,380,000;

  • Upgrading the Lakes Entrance Toilet blocks at the Hummocks ($235,000) and Tennis Club ($145,000);

  • funds for a planned regional indoor sport facility in Bairnsdale to accommodate table tennis and similar indoor sports at an estimated cost of $500,000.

Mayor, Cr Jane Rowe said that the Shire would also upgrade and redefine its property at 55 Palmers Road.

"The previous Council chose to retain the property and allow for further Council and public facilities to be developed there," she said.

"As well as there is the potential to sell portion of the site for residential purposes and we will finalise our plans later this year after further public consultation.

Cr Rowe said the Shire had committed significant funding to new and improved community facilities over the next three years to enhance the community’s quality of life.

"We are planning a new Bairnsdale Library facility to replace the existing old and overcrowded building and will be pursuing the establishment of a major regional performing arts facility for the area," she said.

"We are keen to ensure that our residents have the best facilities that reflect community aspirations and the dynamics of the region."
