Polling Booth Venues Should Be Advertised

Nationals Gippsland Province MP, PETER HALL, has criticised the Australian Electoral Commission for its failure to advertise the location of pre-polling booths.

By Peter Hall - 28th September 2004 - Back to News

He said many people who have legitimate reasons for not being able to vote on October 9 have been left in the dark as to where they can vote prior to the election date.

"To find out where pre-poll centres are located, people have had to ring the electoral commission or access their website. This is not good enough and voting centres should be advertised in local newspapers", Mr Hall said.

He said that as it was compulsory, voting should be made as easy as possible for people to comply with the law.

Mr Hall said he was also astounded to learn that general polling booths for election day would not be advertised in local newspapers. He has been informed that instead people will be referred to national newspapers for a listing of general polling booths.

"I fail to understand the logic of the electoral commission in not advertising the location of local polling booths. As voting venues often change from one election to the next, I can see that there will be confusion on the day with many people finding their local polling booth has been changed," he said.

To assist Gippslanders, Mr Hall said pre-polling booths were now open at the following venues.

Morwell The Chapel, Commercial Road Primary School
Sale Memorial Hall, Macalister Street
Bairnsdale The Cremin Hall (next to the Police Station)
Warragul 28 Mason Street
Wonthaggi Wonthaggi Town Hall
