Students in the 2019 Bass Coast Young Leader program recently participated in a day-long workshop, aimed at celebrating their community.

The Young Leaders workshop is an annual activity, hosted by Bass Coast Shire Council.

Students from Bass Coast schools are nominated to take part in the Young Leaders workshop. The workshop brings the students together to get to know one another, in a fun and dynamic way.

This year’s workshop theme was ‘my tribe, my community’, with a focus on exploring unique aspects and opportunities available in Bass Coast.

Students participated in a range of activities and workshops, from a Thai cooking class with Small Change, Big Change – a local organisation who support refugee families; to music making with Drift Media; Barefoot Bowls with Wonthaggi Police and the Wonthaggi Bowls Club and Dodgeball with GippSport’s Gene Parini.

As with other years, a highlight of the day was the ‘mad minute’ and lunch with the Mayor, Cr Brett Tessari and Deputy Mayor, Cr Bruce Kent.

Cr Tessari said he looks forward to the Young Leaders workshop and that this year’s event was one of his most enjoyable days as Mayor so far.

"The mad-minute is fun. Students get to fire as many questions as they can at me – some funny, some witty and many very clever," Cr Tessari said.

"We extended the minute, because we were having so much fun!

"The lunch provides a great opportunity for Council staff and Councillors to meet some of the wonderful young people in our community and for them to learn more about Council."

The Bass Coast Young Leaders Awards will be held at the Wonthaggi Union Community Arts Centre on Tuesday, 26 February.
