Roads Reopen After Fire

Wellington Shire Council has confirmed that several tourist and access roads within the fire affected mountain areas of the Shire are open for traffic.

By Wellington Shire Council - 16th February 2007 - Back to News

The Dargo High Plains Road, Upper Dargo Road and Wonnangatta Rd are now open to traffic.

"This is great news for local businesses," said Cr Beth Ripper, Mayor of Wellington Shire Council.

"We expect tourists and other road users will again start entering the area.

"While the area is still burnt, there is much to see as there are currently new views in the mountains and the sight of the bush regenerating is truly remarkable," said Cr Ripper.

"People attending tourist events in the area, such as the Dargo Walnut festival in Easter, will be able to get a broader experience in the area."

Cr Ripper said local businesses and tourist operators suffered badly due to the fires and it was critical to get the public back into the area.

"Council will be working with VicRoads and DSE to ensure roads are made safe and reopened as a matter of priority,’ said Cr Ripper.

"However it is important that people drive with care as the burnt areas and recent storms may still create unexpected hazards."
